	street markets You can find markets in many neighborhoods of Amsterdam. Some of them are there on every weekday and on Saturday. Others, like the Noordermarkt on Saturdays and Mondays. There has been a market at the foot of the Noorderkerk since 1623. It started out as a market for pots and earthenware, later rags, pigeons, hats and straw were also sold. Since 1987 the Noordermarkt became a farmers market on Saturdays. On Monday morning you can find a lot of vintage clothes there and on the nearby Lindengracht there is a fabric market. On both days you can also find antiques, curiosities, glass ware and artwork. 	zuiderkerk The Zuiderkerk(southern-church). This church was the first church to be built at the beginning of the 17th century especially for protestant worship. The architect was Hendrick de Keijser. After the ‘Alteration’ of 1578 when the catholic government of the city was replaced by a protestant government the catholic churches were converted into places of worship for the protestants. 	amsterdam art These sculptures, The big traveller and The big watcher by the French artist Jean Marie Appriou (2019) are part of the ArtZuid exhibition, the leading Sculpture Biennale of the Netherlands. Every two years, 50 high-profile sculptures are exhibited for four months in the Amsterdam Zuid area. The 7th edition, with the title Imagine, opened on July 1st and will continue till Oct 17th. 	dutch street food Amsterdam street food. At many locations in the city you can find these fish carts. They sell, amongst other things, the famous Dutch herring. In the 14th century a man called Willem Beukelsz thought up a way to keep the fish longer fresh, the gutting or gibbing of the herring. This enabled the fishermen to stay longer at sea. The fish was salted ( and nowadays frozen) and then matured slowly. So we eat them raw, with chopped onions and/or pickles. This day is celebrated as Keti Koti, the chain is cut, or the chain is broken in Sranantongo. It’s also known as Emancipation Day (St Maarten) or Dia di lucha pa libertat. Since 2002 in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam there is the Nationaal Monument Slavernij geschiedenis (National Monument Slavery History) designed by Erwin de Vries. A ceremony will take place at the monument and in other cities in the Netherlands. Also, on 20 locations in the city people can enjoy heri heri (healing) a dish that originated on the plantations. 	leaning houses Many houses in the city centre are leaning, like this group of houses on the Amstel. The city lies beneath the sea level, and the ground is very soft. Before we can build houses, we need to lay a foundation of piles. There are around 60 piles beneath a house, with a lenght between 12-20 meters. At a depht of 12 meters and again 20 meters there are sand layers. The piles are driven into the soil till they rest on the sand. In the past wooden piles were used, the city rests on 11 million piles. As long as those piles remained under water, they were like stone, but if the groundwater level changed, the piles started to rot. 	amsterdam stories The Montelbaanstoren is an old defense tower on the East side of the old town dating back to the 16th century. The white upper part was added in the 17th century. In the 16th century watchmen used the tower to check for fires in the city, especially on the shipyards. If the alarm was sounded the people from the neighborhood had to form a human chain and pass the bucket to help extinguish the fire. 	amsterdam architecture The Amsterdam opera house stands on an artificial island called Vlooienburg that was created in the bend of the Amstel around 1608. The quays of the island were used for wood storage and the island housed from the middle of the 17th century several orphanages. It was part of the Jewish quarter. After WW II the buildings in the area were in a bad shape, and were demolished to create space for a new city hall designed by the Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer. The polder which was created in 1632 is located between Edam and Hoorn. Here you can find the lowest point in the Province North Holland: 6,60 meters ( 21,7 ft) below the sea level! After the flooding disaster of January 1916 the clay from this polder was used to rebuild and fortify the dike along the Zuiderzee. The nearby Beemster polder is famous for its cheese and we found a cheese vending machine! 	walkingtour amsterdam In the former Binnendijksche Buitenveldersche Polder, an area between the Amstel river and the Boerenwetering which had been used for agriculture and recreation, at the end of the 19th Century a new part of the city was developed. As the population started to increase after 1850 an urban development was designed by city architect van Niftrik and later by Kalff. The area was given the name district YY but was soon known as the Pijp, after the narrow drainage canals that were once part of the polder. One of these canals, the Zaagmolen sloot(sawmill canal) was filled in with sand and is now known as Albert Cuyp straat, where from Monday till Saturday you can find the market with the same name. The Pijp used to be a typical working class area, with narrow streets and small houses. Often several families shared an apartment and even single rooms were rented out to families. Living conditions weren’t great. At the beginning there was no running water or a sewerage system. There were communal bathing houses. In the past 15 years the area has become a popular part of the city, with many bars and restaurants. Many inhabitants have created little gardens on their facades. 	dordrecht Dordrecht originated at the beginning of the 11th C at the confluence of the Merwede and Thuredrith rivers. Dordrecht was given city rights in 1220, which makes it the oldest city in Holland. Due to its location between Rotterdam and Antwerp Dordrecht became a trade city. Wool, cloth, grain, timber and wine were the goods that were traded. Its ‘Golden Age’ was between 1350-1450. Between 1368 and 1806 the coins of Holland were minted in the city. During the 80 Years war with Spain (1568-1648) Dordrecht played an important role: in 1572 representatives of 12 cities gathered in Dordrecht to join together in the struggle against Philips II of Spain. They decided to support William of Orange and recognized him as Stadhouder, earning Dordrecht the nickname ‘birthplace of the Netherlands’. Dordrecht boasts more than 1000 listed buildings and is wel worth a visit! 	amsterdamstories The Begijnhof is a hidden gem in the centre of the city. Dating back to the Middle Ages, a Begijnhof (Béguinage) was a courtyard (hofje) where catholic ladies lived. It was not a convent, the houses were private property and after the Alteration (reformation) in 1578 the ladies continued living there, but their church was transformed into a Presbyterian church, (the English church)and they could no longer openly worship. In 1671 a schuilkerk (hidden church) was created from two houses opposite the church (nowadays the Miracle church). 	amsterdam bar On a rainy day like today, there’s no better place to shelter than in a bruin café (brown bar) such as Café Hoppe. There has been a café here since 1670. The first cafés originated in the 17th C as coffeehouses (hence the name; café is french for coffee) other beverages were served in so called tapperijen or beer houses. Brown bars date back to the 19th C when housewives used their front rooms to serve beverages to clients in order to supplement the household income. This explains the cozy interior of the brown bars and the subtle illumination. The sand (sometimes sawdust) that you see on the floor used to protect the floorboards from discoloration due to the chewing tobacco the clients spat on the floor. 	dutch traditions 5 Pea soup! On a foggy and grey day like today you need this typical Dutch soup. My grandmother used to make the best pea soup. The ingredients are ribs for the stock(or for a vegetarian version use a vegetable stock) which you brown in a pan, add water and a bayleaf and split peas and simmer for an hour. In the mean time dice onion, carrot, leek, celeriac and a couple of celery stalks. Remove the ribs and bayleaf from the pot, take the meat off the ribs and put it back in the pot together with the diced vegetables and let it simmer for another 20 mins, stirring occasionally and maybe add some more water. Season with salt and pepper and put in a smoked sausage. Serve with rye bread and smoked bacon. 	amsterdamstories 4 Until the 1500’s all the houses in Amsterdam were wooden houses. Due to fire hazard, that was no longer allowed; people had to start building stone houses. Since our country is very flat, there was not a lot of natural stone, so this had to be imported. We do have a lot of lakes and rivers, and therefor clay, we used the clay to make bricks, which became the main building material. 	amsterdam 17 At the end of the 15th C the city was surrounded by a brick wall. There were entrance gates, defense towers and a canal, the Singel gracht. This is the Schreierstoren. The name is derived from Schreyhoeckstoren, meaning the sharp angle of the tower. However the Dutch word schreien also means to cry, so we call it the tower of tears or the weeping tower. From this tower the wives of the sailors waved good bye to their husbands when they set sail. 	amsterdam 30 The old church was built in the 14th C as a Catholic church dedicated to St Nicholas. Today, Dec 5 th, the Dutch celebrate St Nicholas Day. According to our tradition St Nicholas (Sinterklaas) comes with his assistants (they are all called Piet and have different tasks) from Spain on a steamboat🚢. They arrive in the middle of Nov. In the following weeks the Pieten will walk over the rooftops and listen down the chimneys to find out whether the children are well behaved. All well behaved children will receive gifts🎁 In those weeks before Dec 5th children can place their shoe under the chimney( or central heating😃) with a carrot for the horse of Sinterklaas. The next morning they will find a small gift or a chocolate letter( first letter of their name). In the past, children who misbehaved were taken by Piet in a burlap sack back to Spain🙃Sinterklaas has a big book with all the information about the behavior of the children.
