	remembranceday The Royal Palace on Dam square. The building dates back to the middle of the 17th C, when it was built as the city hall by architect Jacob van Campen. It was originally built on 13659 wooden piles. Since the beginning of the 19th C it has been the Royal Palace, although the King doesn’t live there. Today, May 4th, the Dutch commemorate all, civilians and soldiers, who have been killed or murdered in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or anywhere else in the world in wars or during peacekeeping missions since the outbreak of the Second World War. The ceremony will take place on Dam square. Our King, Willem-Alexander will walk from the Royal Palace to the National Monument, and will place a wreath. 	liberation day Liberation Day. On May 5th the Dutch celebrate the end of the Second World War. The day before, Remembrance Day, wreaths have been placed at monuments, such as the Homomonument. This monument has been located since 1987 behind the Westerkerk. It consists of 3 pink granite triangles, that together shape a bigger triangle. The triangles symbolize the past, present and future. The monument is a place to commemorate all the people that have been, or still are, persecuted or murdered because of their sexual orientation or identity. During the Second World War, in the Nazi concentration camps, the pink triangle identified the homosexual prisoners. 	amsterdam castle Muiderslot, also known as ‘Amsterdam castle’, is located in Muiden, at the mouth of the river Vecht. The castle dates back to the 13th century. It was built on a strategic point to enforce toll on traders travelling on the Vecht. In 1296 count Floris V was imprisoned in the castle, when he tried to escape he was killed by the noblemen that had conspired against him. In the 17th century, for 39 years, the poet PC Hooft was the bailiff for the Gooi area. He used to spend his summers at the Muiderslot. He invited fellow poets, writers and scholars for visits. The group became known as the Muiderkring. 	amsterdam parks Distillery ‘t Nieuwe Diep. In 1632 the Oetewaler mill was built on this spot to drain the water of the Overamstelsche polder into a little lake called het Nieuwe Diep. In 1880 the mill was replaced by a steam pumping station that operated till 1984. Since 1928 the area is part of the Flevopark. 	street markets You can find markets in many neighborhoods of Amsterdam. Some of them are there on every weekday and on Saturday. Others, like the Noordermarkt on Saturdays and Mondays. There has been a market at the foot of the Noorderkerk since 1623. It started out as a market for pots and earthenware, later rags, pigeons, hats and straw were also sold. Since 1987 the Noordermarkt became a farmers market on Saturdays. On Monday morning you can find a lot of vintage clothes there and on the nearby Lindengracht there is a fabric market. On both days you can also find antiques, curiosities, glass ware and artwork. A small canal that had been dug in 1585 was enlarged in 1612 and given the name Herengracht( gentlemen’s canal). 	zuiderkerk The Zuiderkerk(southern-church). This church was the first church to be built at the beginning of the 17th century especially for protestant worship. The architect was Hendrick de Keijser. After the ‘Alteration’ of 1578 when the catholic government of the city was replaced by a protestant government the catholic churches were converted into places of worship for the protestants. 	houseboats Already in the 17th century there were houseboats in Amsterdam. They belonged to foreign traders in glass-and earthenware who sold their merchandise illegally. In the 19th century there were ships all over the city, they were used as housing for the laborers.The wooden barges were replaced by steel barges. In the 1920’s the number of houseboats increased from 85 to over 1100 due to housing shortage. After the Second World War the number increased once more, especially in the sixties and seventies, the Hippie era. 	amsterdam art These sculptures, The big traveller and The big watcher by the French artist Jean Marie Appriou (2019) are part of the ArtZuid exhibition, the leading Sculpture Biennale of the Netherlands. Every two years, 50 high-profile sculptures are exhibited for four months in the Amsterdam Zuid area. The 7th edition, with the title Imagine, opened on July 1st and will continue till Oct 17th. The mission of ArtZuid is to make art accessible for everyone, so you can enjoy the exhibition for free. 	dutch street food Amsterdam street food. At many locations in the city you can find these fish carts. They sell, amongst other things, the famous Dutch herring. In the 14th century a man called Willem Beukelsz thought up a way to keep the fish longer fresh, the gutting or gibbing of the herring. This enabled the fishermen to stay longer at sea. The fish was salted ( and nowadays frozen) and then matured slowly. So we eat them raw, with chopped onions and/or pickles. 	leaning houses Many houses in the city centre are leaning, like this group of houses on the Amstel. The city lies beneath the sea level, and the ground is very soft. Before we can build houses, we need to lay a foundation of piles. There are around 60 piles beneath a house, with a lenght between 12-20 meters. At a depht of 12 meters and again 20 meters there are sand layers. The piles are driven into the soil till they rest on the sand. In the past wooden piles were used, the city rests on 11 million piles. As long as those piles remained under water, they were like stone, but if the groundwater level changed, the piles started to rot. In the 16th century watchmen used the tower to check for fires in the city, especially on the shipyards. The quays of the island were used for wood storage and the island housed from the middle of the 17th century several orphanages. It was part of the Jewish quarter. After WW II the buildings in the area were in a bad shape, and were demolished to create space for a new city hall designed by the Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer. 	walkingtour amsterdam In the former Binnendijksche Buitenveldersche Polder, an area between the Amstel river and the Boerenwetering which had been used for agriculture and recreation, at the end of the 19th Century a new part of the city was developed. As the population started to increase after 1850 an urban development was designed by city architect van Niftrik and later by Kalff. The area was given the name district YY but was soon known as the Pijp, after the narrow drainage canals that were once part of the polder. One of these canals, the Zaagmolen sloot(sawmill canal) was filled in with sand and is now known as Albert Cuyp straat, where from Monday till Saturday you can find the market with the same name. The Pijp used to be a typical working class area, with narrow streets and small houses. Often several families shared an apartment and even single rooms were rented out to families. Living conditions weren’t great. At the beginning there was no running water or a sewerage system. There were communal bathing houses. In the past 15 years the area has become a popular part of the city, with many bars and restaurants. Many inhabitants have created little gardens on their facades. 	amsterdamstories The Begijnhof is a hidden gem in the centre of the city. Dating back to the Middle Ages, a Begijnhof (Béguinage) was a courtyard (hofje) where catholic ladies lived. It was not a convent, the houses were private property and after the Alteration (reformation) in 1578 the ladies continued living there, but their church was transformed into a Presbyterian church, (the English church)and they could no longer openly worship. In 1671 a schuilkerk (hidden church) was created from two houses opposite the church (nowadays the Miracle church). The first cafés originated in the 17th C as coffeehouses (hence the name; café is french for coffee) other beverages were served in so called tapperijen or beer houses. Brown bars date back to the 19th C when housewives used their front rooms to serve beverages to clients in order to supplement the household income. This explains the cozy interior of the brown bars and the subtle illumination. The sand (sometimes sawdust) that you see on the floor used to protect the floorboards from discoloration due to the chewing tobacco the clients spat on the floor. When the city expanded beyond the wall at the end of the 16th C, the wall was demolished and the gate became the weigh house. The building housed several guilds, such as the painter’s guild, the mason’s guild and the surgeon’s guild in the 17th C. Anatomical lessons took place in the building, like the one depicted by Rembrandt: the Anatomical lesson of Dr. Tulp. For these lessons, that took place during the winter months due to lack of refrigeration, the bodies of convicted criminals were used. At the beginning of the 19th C the building stopped being used as a weigh house. It then had many different purposes and housed for a while the Jewish historical museum. 	dutch traditions 5 Pea soup! On a foggy and grey day like today you need this typical Dutch soup. My grandmother used to make the best pea soup. The ingredients are ribs for the stock(or for a vegetarian version use a vegetable stock) which you brown in a pan, add water and a bayleaf and split peas and simmer for an hour. In the mean time dice onion, carrot, leek, celeriac and a couple of celery stalks. Remove the ribs and bayleaf from the pot, take the meat off the ribs and put it back in the pot together with the diced vegetables and let it simmer for another 20 mins, stirring occasionally and maybe add some more water. Season with salt and pepper and put in a smoked sausage. Serve with rye bread and smoked bacon.
