amsterdamhouses

In the past people had to pay taxes on the width of the houses. So they built narrow, high and deep houses. Are you planning a visit to Amsterdam?

amsterdamhouses 2

Since most of the houses are narrow, there isn’t much space for the staircases either, they are also narrow and steep. Which made it difficult to bring merchandise or furniture up to the higher floors. This is why the buildings have a hoist. Can you see the rope suspended from one of them?

artisans

Delft blue pottery. The pottery dates back to the 17th C, when Delft had over 30 potteries. The artisans took their inspiration from the Chinese and Japanese porcelain that was brought to the Netherlands by the Dutch East India Company. The main color that they used was blue, although other colors could be used too. You can still visit one of the factories today.

dordrecht

Dordrecht originated at the beginning of the 11th C at the confluence of the Merwede and Thuredrith rivers. Dordrecht was given city rights in 1220, which makes it the oldest city in Holland. Due to its location between Rotterdam and Antwerp Dordrecht became a trade city. Wool, cloth, grain, timber and wine were the goods that were traded. Its ‘Golden Age’ was between 1350-1450. Between 1368 and 1806 the coins of Holland were minted in the city. During the 80 Years war with Spain (1568-1648) Dordrecht played an important role: in 1572 representatives of 12 cities gathered in Dordrecht to join together in the struggle against Philips II of Spain. They decided to support William of Orange and recognized him as Stadhouder, earning Dordrecht the nickname ‘birthplace of the Netherlands’. Dordrecht boasts more than 1000 listed buildings and is wel worth a visit! Don’t miss the exhibition ‘In het licht van Cuyp’ at the Dordrechts museum (till March 6th 2022).

windmills 2

Windmills of Amsterdam. The 17th C Binnendijkse Buitenvelderse polder owes its name to the location between the dikes of the rivers Amstel and Schinkel. The Rieker mill , a drainage mill on the Amsteldijk, originally stood in a different location near the Nieuwe meer. The mill was moved to its present spot in 1961, to be used by the water authority to drain excess water from the polder into the Amstel river, or to refresh the water in the polder.

dutch traditions 5

Pea soup! On a foggy and grey day like today you need this typical Dutch soup. My grandmother used to make the best pea soup. The ingredients are ribs for the stock(or for a vegetarian version use a vegetable stock) which you brown in a pan, add water and a bayleaf and split peas and simmer for an hour. In the mean time dice onion, carrot, leek, celeriac and a couple of celery stalks. Remove the ribs and bayleaf from the pot, take the meat off the ribs and put it back in the pot together with the diced vegetables and let it simmer for another 20 mins, stirring occasionally and maybe add some more water. Season with salt and pepper and put in a smoked sausage. Serve with rye bread and smoked bacon. Enjoy!

montelbaanstoren

The Montelbaanstoren was built at the beginning of the 16th C on the Eastern side of the city as a defense tower and a look out over the Zuiderzee. At the beginning of the 17th C the upper part was added by the architect Hendrick de Keijser. The tower was given the nickname ‘mad Jacob’ because the bells would ring unexpectedly.

The old church was built in the 14th C as a Catholic church dedicated to St Nicholas. Today, Dec 5 th, the Dutch celebrate St Nicholas Day. According to our tradition St Nicholas (Sinterklaas) comes with his assistants (they are all called Piet and have different tasks) from Spain on a steamboat🚢. They arrive in the middle of Nov. In the following weeks the Pieten will walk over the rooftops and listen down the chimneys to find out whether the children are well behaved. All well behaved children will receive gifts🎁 In those weeks before Dec 5th children can place their shoe under the chimney( or central heating😃) with a carrot for the horse of Sinterklaas. The next morning they will find a small gift or a chocolate letter( first letter of their name). In the past, children who misbehaved were taken by Piet in a burlap sack back to Spain🙃Sinterklaas has a big book with all the information about the behavior of the children. Tonight there will be a knock on the door and on the doorstep there will be a big basket full of presents🎁🎁🎁 We eat speculaas ( windmill cookies) and pepernoten (little spiced biscuits).

In the 17th C there were approximately 10 000 windmills in the Netherlands. They were used to drain the land and for industrial purposes. A short drive from Amsterdam you can visit the windmills of the Zaanse Schans, the first industrial area powered by the wind.
