Until the 1500’s all the houses in Amsterdam were wooden houses. Due to fire hazard, that was no longer allowed; people had to start building stone houses. Since our country is very flat, there was not a lot of natural stone, so this had to be imported. We do have a lot of lakes and rivers, and therefor clay, we used the clay to make bricks, which became the main building material. There are only a few wooden buildings left, like this one at the Begijnhof.
