There are special tulip routes you can walk, showing you different parts of the city. Don’t forget to take a look in the public garden of the museum on the Amstel(formerly the Hermitage museum) where you can see more than 5000 tulips/100 different varieties! 	amsterdamstories 4 Until the 1500’s all the houses in Amsterdam were wooden houses. Due to fire hazard, that was no longer allowed; people had to start building stone houses. Since our country is very flat, there was not a lot of natural stone, so this had to be imported. We do have a lot of lakes and rivers, and therefor clay, we used the clay to make bricks, which became the main building material.
