schreierstoren
amsterdam stories 2Schreierstoren. The Schreierstoren used to be part of the 15th Century city wall. It’s name is derived from Schrayershouck, meaning a sharp corner or angle. But the Dutch word schreien also means to cry. So we call it the tower of tears or the weeping tower because this was the place where the wives said good bye to the sailors when they left.#amsterdam_stories #citytrip #guide_service_amsterdam #visitamsterdam #walkingtour_amsterdam #beautifulcity #fremdenführerinamsterdam #bike_tour_amsterdam #yourprivateguideinamsterdam #schreierstoren |

amsterdam 17At the end of the 15th C the city was surrounded by a brick wall. There were entrance gates, defense towers and a canal, the Singel gracht. This is the Schreierstoren. The name is derived from Schreyhoeckstoren, meaning the sharp angle of the tower. However the Dutch word schreien also means to cry, so we call it the tower of tears or the weeping tower. From this tower the wives of the sailors waved good bye to their husbands when they set sail. One of the people leaving from the tower was Henry Hudson, there is a plaque.#amsterdam #amsterdamhistory #amsterdamstreets #schreierstoren #walking_tour_amsterdam #amsterdamtravel #guide_service_amsterdam #guidedtour #visitamsterdam #holland #your_guide_in_holland |
