amsterdamhouses 2Since most of the houses are narrow, there isn’t much space for the staircases either, they are also narrow and steep. Which made it difficult to bring merchandise or furniture up to the higher floors. This is why the buildings have a hoist. windmillsIn the 17th C there were more than 10000 windmills in the Netherlands. They were used for drainage and industrial purposes: saw mills, oil mills, paper mills etc. Nowadays there are still over a thousand windmills. About 25% still function, the rest have been converted into restaurants or houses, like this mill on the outskirts of Weesp.#windmills #countryside #biketour #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #visitholland #fahrradtour #guide_service_amsterdam #iamsterdam #traveltips #photoftheday #besuchensieholland |

amsterdam bike tourWith over 22.9 million bicycles in the Netherlands, there are more bicycles than inhabitants. The Dutch have on average 1.3 bicycles per person (in the USA 0.3). Most of the country is flat and there are 37,000 km (almost 23,000 miles) of bike paths, which makes it a good destination for bicycle tours. In 2019 the Dutch travelled a whopping 17.6 billion km (almost 11 billion miles) by bike, 25% of all traffic movement is done by bicycle. Join me on a biketour! biketourThe Western islands. At the beginning of the 17th century 3 islands were created on the West side of Amsterdam; the front island, middle island and aft island. Today they are known as the Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland and Realeneiland. They used to house the wharfs and storehouses of the Dutch West India Company, and in the 18th century salt stores, fish smokehouses and tanneries. Nowadays it is a nice residential area with hidden gardens.#biketour #iamsterdam #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #fremdenfüherinamsterdam #fahrradtour #visitamsterdam #amsterdamworld #guide_service_amsterdam #iloveamsterdam #besuchensieholland #citytrip #traveltips |

herengrachtThe oldest house on Herengracht. At the beginning of the 17th century the city of Amsterdam was expanded by digging the famous canal belt. A small canal that had been dug in 1585 was enlarged in 1612 and given the name Herengracht( gentlemen’s canal). The house with the green shutters was built in 1590 and is now the oldest residence on the canal.#herengracht #visitamsterdam #iamsterdam #guide_service_amsterdam #walking_tour_amsterdam #citytrip #fremdenführerinamsterdam #besuchensieholland #traveltips #photooftheday #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #amsterdamworld |

summer in the citySummertime! Amsterdam consist for more than 25% of waterways. There are approx. 100 kms of canals, there is the Amstel and the IJ. And there are lakes like the Gaasperplas and the Sloterplas. To the East of the city there is the Markermeer, part of the bigger IJsselmeer. In the lake artificial islands have been created that form a new part of the city called IJburg. On the other side of the lake is the quaint village called Durgerdam.#summer_in_the_city #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #citytrip #durgerdam #guide_service_amsterdam #privatführerinamsterdam #visitholland #iloveamsterdam #fahrradtouramsterdam #besuchensieholland #yourprivateguideinamsterdam |

zuiderkerkThe Zuiderkerk(southern-church). This church was the first church to be built at the beginning of the 17th century especially for protestant worship. The architect was Hendrick de Keijser. After the ‘Alteration’ of 1578 when the catholic government of the city was replaced by a protestant government the catholic churches were converted into places of worship for the protestants. Catholics were no longer allowed to openly worship at the time, instead they used ‘schuilkerken’ , hidden churches.#zuiderkerk #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #walkingtouramsterdam #fremdenführerinamsterdam #visitthenetherlands #guide_service _amsterdam #citytrip #biketouramsterdam #besuchensieholland #yourprivateguideinamsterdam #holiday |

dutch street foodAmsterdam street food. At many locations in the city you can find these fish carts. They sell, amongst other things, the famous Dutch herring. In the 14th century a man called Willem Beukelsz thought up a way to keep the fish longer fresh, the gutting or gibbing of the herring. This enabled the fishermen to stay longer at sea. The fish was salted ( and nowadays frozen) and then matured slowly. So we eat them raw, with chopped onions and/or pickles. During the months of June, July and August you can find the Hollandse nieuwe, a herring that has at a fat percentage of at least 16% and is gutted, salted and filleted in the traditional Dutch way.#dutch_street_food #visitholland #hollandse_nieuwe #guideservice_amsterdam #matjes #fremdenführerinamsterdam #besuchensieholland #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #citytrip #haring #walkingtouramsterdam #matjesherring #street_food #yourprivateguideinamsterdam |

dutch countryside 2A day in the Dutch countryside. This museum windmill called de Breek can be found in the Etersheimer Braakpolder. The polder which was created in 1632 is located between Edam and Hoorn. Here you can find the lowest point in the Province North Holland: 6,60 meters ( 21,7 ft) below the sea level! After the flooding disaster of January 1916 the clay from this polder was used to rebuild and fortify the dike along the Zuiderzee. The nearby Beemster polder is famous for its cheese and we found a cheese vending machine! amsterdam viewThe St. Nicholas church is the 3rd church in Amsterdam dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. The first church, built at the beginning of the 14th C, was converted into a calvinist church after the Alteration of 1578 and is now known as the Old church. When in the 17th and 18th C it wasn’t possible for catholics to openly worship, a canal house belonging to a rich merchant was used as a ‘schuilkerk’ or hidden church. The building still exists and now houses the Onze lieve heer op solder (our Lord in the attic) museum. dordrechtDordrecht originated at the beginning of the 11th C at the confluence of the Merwede and Thuredrith rivers. Dordrecht was given city rights in 1220, which makes it the oldest city in Holland. Due to its location between Rotterdam and Antwerp Dordrecht became a trade city. Wool, cloth, grain, timber and wine were the goods that were traded. Its ‘Golden Age’ was between 1350-1450. Between 1368 and 1806 the coins of Holland were minted in the city. During the 80 Years war with Spain (1568-1648) Dordrecht played an important role: in 1572 representatives of 12 cities gathered in Dordrecht to join together in the struggle against Philips II of Spain. They decided to support William of Orange and recognized him as Stadhouder, earning Dordrecht the nickname ‘birthplace of the Netherlands’. Dordrecht boasts more than 1000 listed buildings and is wel worth a visit!
