artisansDelft blue pottery.
The pottery dates back to the 17th C, when Delft had over 30 potteries. The artisans took their inspiration from the Chinese and Japanese porcelain that was brought to the Netherlands by the Dutch East India Company.
The main color that they used was blue, although other colors could be used too.
You can still visit one of the factories today.

Yesterday his Royal Highness Willem Alexander opened the Floriade expo.
Today it opened to the public.
Till October 9th you can visit the horticultural exhibition that takes place every 10 years.
This editions theme is Building Green Cities.
There are 60 ha to discover.
2800 trees, 40000 shrubs, 200000 perennials and 1000000 bulbs were planted.
There are pavillions from many foreign countries.

amsterdam 17At the end of the 15th C the city was surrounded by a brick wall. There were entrance gates, defense towers and a canal, the Singel gracht.
This is the Schreierstoren. The name is derived from Schreyhoeckstoren, meaning the sharp angle of the tower.
However the Dutch word schreien also means to cry, so we call it the tower of tears or the weeping tower.
From this tower the wives of the sailors waved good bye to their husbands when they set sail.
One of the people leaving from the tower was Henry Hudson, there is a plaque.
