amsterdam bike tour

With over 22.9 million bicycles in the Netherlands, there are more bicycles than inhabitants. The Dutch have on average 1.3 bicycles per person (in the USA 0.3). Most of the country is flat and there are 37,000 km (almost 23,000 miles) of bike paths, which makes it a good destination for bicycle tours. In 2019 the Dutch travelled a whopping 17.6 billion km (almost 11 billion miles) by bike, 25% of all traffic movement is done by bicycle. Join me on a biketour! Info in the bio.

amsterdam castle

Muiderslot, also known as ‘Amsterdam castle’, is located in Muiden, at the mouth of the river Vecht. The castle dates back to the 13th century. It was built on a strategic point to enforce toll on traders travelling on the Vecht. In 1296 count Floris V was imprisoned in the castle, when he tried to escape he was killed by the noblemen that had conspired against him. In the 17th century, for 39 years, the poet PC Hooft was the bailiff for the Gooi area. He used to spend his summers at the Muiderslot. He invited fellow poets, writers and scholars for visits. The group became known as the Muiderkring. Nowadays the castle is a national museum.

Distillery ‘t Nieuwe Diep. In 1632 the Oetewaler mill was built on this spot to drain the water of the Overamstelsche polder into a little lake called het Nieuwe Diep. In 1880 the mill was replaced by a steam pumping station that operated till 1984. Since 1928 the area is part of the Flevopark. The building nowadays houses a distillery and tasting room and is a popular spot on a sunny day.

street markets

You can find markets in many neighborhoods of Amsterdam. Some of them are there on every weekday and on Saturday. Others, like the Noordermarkt on Saturdays and Mondays. There has been a market at the foot of the Noorderkerk since 1623. It started out as a market for pots and earthenware, later rags, pigeons, hats and straw were also sold. Since 1987 the Noordermarkt became a farmers market on Saturdays. On Monday morning you can find a lot of vintage clothes there and on the nearby Lindengracht there is a fabric market. On both days you can also find antiques, curiosities, glass ware and artwork. Don’t forget to taste the famous apple pie at Winkel 43, you’ll see people line up for this treat!

biketour

The Western islands. At the beginning of the 17th century 3 islands were created on the West side of Amsterdam; the front island, middle island and aft island. Today they are known as the Bickerseiland, Prinseneiland and Realeneiland. They used to house the wharfs and storehouses of the Dutch West India Company, and in the 18th century salt stores, fish smokehouses and tanneries. Nowadays it is a nice residential area with hidden gardens.

herengracht

The oldest house on Herengracht. At the beginning of the 17th century the city of Amsterdam was expanded by digging the famous canal belt. A small canal that had been dug in 1585 was enlarged in 1612 and given the name Herengracht( gentlemen’s canal). The house with the green shutters was built in 1590 and is now the oldest residence on the canal.

The Tuschinski Theatre celebrated its 100th birthday yesterday. This cinema is named after its founder Abraham Tuschinski and designed by H.L. de Jong in an eclectic mix of Jugendstil and Amsterdam School architecture. According to Abraham Tuschinski ‘Everybody has the right to relax after a hard day of working’ and the cinema is a place to broaden the mind and develop good taste. According to the London magazine Time Out Tuschinski is the most beautiful cinema in the world.

halloween

Happy Halloween from Amsterdam! On the Singel in Amsterdam a man called Arie created this garden with 80 pumpkins. The giant pumpkin weighs 530 kgs (approx 1000 pounds) and it was grown in the Eastern part of the country. It took 6 neighbors to lift it! It will go to the elephants of the Artis Zoo later in November.

amsterdamstories

The Begijnhof is a hidden gem in the centre of the city. Dating back to the Middle Ages, a Begijnhof (Béguinage) was a courtyard (hofje) where catholic ladies lived. It was not a convent, the houses were private property and after the Alteration (reformation) in 1578 the ladies continued living there, but their church was transformed into a Presbyterian church, (the English church)and they could no longer openly worship. In 1671 a schuilkerk (hidden church) was created from two houses opposite the church (nowadays the Miracle church). On the Begijnhof you can also find one of two remaining wooden houses.

amsterdam bar

On a rainy day like today, there’s no better place to shelter than in a bruin café (brown bar) such as Café Hoppe. There has been a café here since 1670. The first cafés originated in the 17th C as coffeehouses (hence the name; café is french for coffee) other beverages were served in so called tapperijen or beer houses. Brown bars date back to the 19th C when housewives used their front rooms to serve beverages to clients in order to supplement the household income. This explains the cozy interior of the brown bars and the subtle illumination. The sand (sometimes sawdust) that you see on the floor used to protect the floorboards from discoloration due to the chewing tobacco the clients spat on the floor. It also worked as a kind of sanding paper on the wooden floorboards.

amsterdam houses

In the past, people were taxed on the width of the house, so they built narrow, high and deep houses. Since there was not a lot of room for the stairs, they also were narrow and very steep. This made it difficult to get merchandise up to the higher floors. That’s why the houses have the hoisting beam at the top of the façade, they were used to bring up the merchandise, and furniture to the top floors.

amsterdambynight

The Waag (weigh house) used to be an entrance gate in the 15th C city wall, called St. Anthony’s gate. When the city expanded beyond the wall at the end of the 16th C, the wall was demolished and the gate became the weigh house. The building housed several guilds, such as the painter’s guild, the mason’s guild and the surgeon’s guild in the 17th C. Anatomical lessons took place in the building, like the one depicted by Rembrandt: the Anatomical lesson of Dr. Tulp. For these lessons, that took place during the winter months due to lack of refrigeration, the bodies of convicted criminals were used. At the beginning of the 19th C the building stopped being used as a weigh house. It then had many different purposes and housed for a while the Jewish historical museum. Nowadays there are the offices of the Waag society and there is a restaurant.

windmills 2

Windmills of Amsterdam. The 17th C Binnendijkse Buitenvelderse polder owes its name to the location between the dikes of the rivers Amstel and Schinkel. The Rieker mill , a drainage mill on the Amsteldijk, originally stood in a different location near the Nieuwe meer. The mill was moved to its present spot in 1961, to be used by the water authority to drain excess water from the polder into the Amstel river, or to refresh the water in the polder.

The old church was built in the 14th C as a Catholic church dedicated to St Nicholas. Today, Dec 5 th, the Dutch celebrate St Nicholas Day. According to our tradition St Nicholas (Sinterklaas) comes with his assistants (they are all called Piet and have different tasks) from Spain on a steamboat🚢. They arrive in the middle of Nov. In the following weeks the Pieten will walk over the rooftops and listen down the chimneys to find out whether the children are well behaved. All well behaved children will receive gifts🎁 In those weeks before Dec 5th children can place their shoe under the chimney( or central heating😃) with a carrot for the horse of Sinterklaas. The next morning they will find a small gift or a chocolate letter( first letter of their name). In the past, children who misbehaved were taken by Piet in a burlap sack back to Spain🙃Sinterklaas has a big book with all the information about the behavior of the children. Tonight there will be a knock on the door and on the doorstep there will be a big basket full of presents🎁🎁🎁 We eat speculaas ( windmill cookies) and pepernoten (little spiced biscuits).
