	amsterdam castle Muiderslot, also known as ‘Amsterdam castle’, is located in Muiden, at the mouth of the river Vecht. The castle dates back to the 13th century. It was built on a strategic point to enforce toll on traders travelling on the Vecht. In 1296 count Floris V was imprisoned in the castle, when he tried to escape he was killed by the noblemen that had conspired against him. In the 17th century, for 39 years, the poet PC Hooft was the bailiff for the Gooi area. He used to spend his summers at the Muiderslot. He invited fellow poets, writers and scholars for visits. The group became known as the Muiderkring. 	amsterdam parks Distillery ‘t Nieuwe Diep. In 1632 the Oetewaler mill was built on this spot to drain the water of the Overamstelsche polder into a little lake called het Nieuwe Diep. In 1880 the mill was replaced by a steam pumping station that operated till 1984. Since 1928 the area is part of the Flevopark.
