The Montelbaanstoren is an old defense tower on the East side of the old town dating back to the 16th century. The white upper part was added in the 17th century. In the 16th century watchmen used the tower to check for fires in the city, especially on the shipyards. If the alarm was sounded the people from the neighborhood had to form a human chain and pass the bucket to help extinguish the fire. In the 17th century Jan van der Heijden invented the first firehose.

The St. Nicholas church is the 3rd church in Amsterdam dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. The first church, built at the beginning of the 14th C, was converted into a calvinist church after the Alteration of 1578 and is now known as the Old church. When in the 17th and 18th C it wasn’t possible for catholics to openly worship, a canal house belonging to a rich merchant was used as a ‘schuilkerk’ or hidden church. The building still exists and now houses the Onze lieve heer op solder (our Lord in the attic) museum. The church you see on this photo was built at the end of the 19th C in neo-baroque style.

Is this Amsterdam? Yes, it’s the He Hua 荷華寺 (Lotus flower) buddhist temple on the Zeedijk(善德街) . This temple (the largest religious building in Chinese style in Europe, was built in the year 2000. Amsterdam’s Chinatown originated in 1911, which makes it the oldest Chinatown on the European mainland.

At the end of the 15th C the city was surrounded by a brick wall. There were entrance gates, defense towers and a canal, the Singel gracht. This is the Schreierstoren. The name is derived from Schreyhoeckstoren, meaning the sharp angle of the tower. However the Dutch word schreien also means to cry, so we call it the tower of tears or the weeping tower. From this tower the wives of the sailors waved good bye to their husbands when they set sail. One of the people leaving from the tower was Henry Hudson, there is a plaque.

The Amsterdam. This is a copy of an 18th C ship, built for Sail Amsterdam 1990 and now part of the collection of the Maritime museum. With such ships the trade companies went all over the world in search of merchandise. Can you see the statues of Mercury( God of trade) and Neptune( God of the sea)?

You can find one of the oldest houses of the city at the beginning of the Herengracht. The house dates back to the end of the 16C. Two even older wooden houses dating back to the 15C can be found on the Zeedijk and the Begijnhof.
