Amsterdam almshouses are hidden gems. They were built by wealthy citizens for former workers or for widows and orphans. This one, the ‘Raepenhofje’ , is one of the oldest and most authentic courtyards, built in 1648 by Pieter Adriaensz. Raep, who was the treasurer of the city.
The Jordaan was built in the 17th C for the artisans and craft people with professions that made a lot of noise and pollution. They were not allowed to live along the main canals. Still nowadays the Jordaan is an area with many cafés, restaurants and art galleries.
Westerkerk.
when the Westerkerk was built at the beginning of the 17th C it was the largest protestant church in the world.
Rembrandt was buried in the cemetery of this church.
