amsterdam storiesThe Montelbaanstoren is an old defense tower on the East side of the old town dating back to the 16th century. The white upper part was added in the 17th century. In the 16th century watchmen used the tower to check for fires in the city, especially on the shipyards. If the alarm was sounded the people from the neighborhood had to form a human chain and pass the bucket to help extinguish the fire. In the 17th century Jan van der Heijden invented the first firehose.#amsterdam_stories #visitamsterdam #guideserviceamsterdam #walkingtouramsterdam #traveltips #fremdenführerinamsterdam #visitholland #yourprivateguideinamsterdam #summerinthecity #amsterdamhistory #iloveamsterdam #montelbaanstoren |

amsterdam stories 2Schreierstoren. The Schreierstoren used to be part of the 15th Century city wall. It’s name is derived from Schrayershouck, meaning a sharp corner or angle. But the Dutch word schreien also means to cry. So we call it the tower of tears or the weeping tower because this was the place where the wives said good bye to the sailors when they left.#amsterdam_stories #citytrip #guide_service_amsterdam #visitamsterdam #walkingtour_amsterdam #beautifulcity #fremdenführerinamsterdam #bike_tour_amsterdam #yourprivateguideinamsterdam #schreierstoren |
