	street markets You can find markets in many neighborhoods of Amsterdam. Some of them are there on every weekday and on Saturday. Others, like the Noordermarkt on Saturdays and Mondays. There has been a market at the foot of the Noorderkerk since 1623. It started out as a market for pots and earthenware, later rags, pigeons, hats and straw were also sold. Since 1987 the Noordermarkt became a farmers market on Saturdays. On Monday morning you can find a lot of vintage clothes there and on the nearby Lindengracht there is a fabric market. On both days you can also find antiques, curiosities, glass ware and artwork. 	zuiderkerk The Zuiderkerk(southern-church). This church was the first church to be built at the beginning of the 17th century especially for protestant worship. The architect was Hendrick de Keijser. After the ‘Alteration’ of 1578 when the catholic government of the city was replaced by a protestant government the catholic churches were converted into places of worship for the protestants. 	houseboats Already in the 17th century there were houseboats in Amsterdam. They belonged to foreign traders in glass-and earthenware who sold their merchandise illegally. In the 19th century there were ships all over the city, they were used as housing for the laborers.The wooden barges were replaced by steel barges. In the 1920’s the number of houseboats increased from 85 to over 1100 due to housing shortage. After the Second World War the number increased once more, especially in the sixties and seventies, the Hippie era. 	amsterdam art These sculptures, The big traveller and The big watcher by the French artist Jean Marie Appriou (2019) are part of the ArtZuid exhibition, the leading Sculpture Biennale of the Netherlands. Every two years, 50 high-profile sculptures are exhibited for four months in the Amsterdam Zuid area. The 7th edition, with the title Imagine, opened on July 1st and will continue till Oct 17th. The mission of ArtZuid is to make art accessible for everyone, so you can enjoy the exhibition for free. 	dutch street food Amsterdam street food. At many locations in the city you can find these fish carts. They sell, amongst other things, the famous Dutch herring. In the 14th century a man called Willem Beukelsz thought up a way to keep the fish longer fresh, the gutting or gibbing of the herring. This enabled the fishermen to stay longer at sea. The fish was salted ( and nowadays frozen) and then matured slowly. So we eat them raw, with chopped onions and/or pickles. 	leaning houses Many houses in the city centre are leaning, like this group of houses on the Amstel. The city lies beneath the sea level, and the ground is very soft. Before we can build houses, we need to lay a foundation of piles. There are around 60 piles beneath a house, with a lenght between 12-20 meters. At a depht of 12 meters and again 20 meters there are sand layers. The piles are driven into the soil till they rest on the sand. In the past wooden piles were used, the city rests on 11 million piles. As long as those piles remained under water, they were like stone, but if the groundwater level changed, the piles started to rot. 	amsterdam stories The Montelbaanstoren is an old defense tower on the East side of the old town dating back to the 16th century. The white upper part was added in the 17th century. In the 16th century watchmen used the tower to check for fires in the city, especially on the shipyards. If the alarm was sounded the people from the neighborhood had to form a human chain and pass the bucket to help extinguish the fire. 	amsterdam architecture The Amsterdam opera house stands on an artificial island called Vlooienburg that was created in the bend of the Amstel around 1608. The quays of the island were used for wood storage and the island housed from the middle of the 17th century several orphanages. It was part of the Jewish quarter. After WW II the buildings in the area were in a bad shape, and were demolished to create space for a new city hall designed by the Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer. 	amsterdamstories 4 Until the 1500’s all the houses in Amsterdam were wooden houses. Due to fire hazard, that was no longer allowed; people had to start building stone houses. Since our country is very flat, there was not a lot of natural stone, so this had to be imported. We do have a lot of lakes and rivers, and therefor clay, we used the clay to make bricks, which became the main building material.
