Café life. On a rainy day like today, there’s no better place to shelter than in a bruin café (brown bar) such as Café Hoppe. There has been a café here since 1670. The first cafés originated in the 17th C as coffeehouses (hence the name; café is french for coffee) other beverages were served in so called tapperijen or beer houses. Brown bars date back to the 19th C when housewives used their front rooms to serve beverages to clients in order to supplement the household income. This explains the cozy interior of the brown bars and the subtle illumination.
