Here you can find( on the left) one of the few remaining wooden houses of Amsterdam, the building now houses a quaint bar called ‘t Aepjen. amsterdam 33Café life. On a rainy day like today, there’s no better place to shelter than in a bruin café (brown bar) such as Café Hoppe. There has been a café here since 1670. The first cafés originated in the 17th C as coffeehouses (hence the name; café is french for coffee) other beverages were served in so called tapperijen or beer houses. Brown bars date back to the 19th C when housewives used their front rooms to serve beverages to clients in order to supplement the household income.
