the amsterdam flagThe Amsterdam flag, based on the coat of arms of the city, consists of two red lines with a black line in the middle. Often, a line represents a river. In this case the Amstel river. On the black line there are three St. Andrew’s crosses. The crosses used to be part of the coat of arms of an important landowner in the 13th C called Persijn. It is said that the 3 crosses stood for the dangers in the past: water, fire and the plague. The coat of Amsterdam can be found on many historical buildings in the city.#the_amsterdam_flag #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #holland #iamsterdam #citytrip #fremdenfüherinamsterdam #iloveamsterdam #beiunsinamsterdam #guideserviceamsterdam #stadtführung #traveltips #walkingtouramsterdam #biketouramsterdam #history #storytelling #visitthenetherlands |

amsterdam castleMuiderslot, also known as ‘Amsterdam castle’, is located in Muiden, at the mouth of the river Vecht. The castle dates back to the 13th century. It was built on a strategic point to enforce toll on traders travelling on the Vecht. In 1296 count Floris V was imprisoned in the castle, when he tried to escape he was killed by the noblemen that had conspired against him. In the 17th century, for 39 years, the poet PC Hooft was the bailiff for the Gooi area. He used to spend his summers at the Muiderslot. He invited fellow poets, writers and scholars for visits. The group became known as the Muiderkring. Nowadays the castle is a national museum.#amsterdam_castle #muiderslot #visitamsterdamwithaprivateguide #biketouramsterdam #guide_service_amsterdam #citytrip #fahrradtouramsterdam #fremdenführerinamsterdam #beiunsinamsterdam #iamsterdam #history #visitholland #amsterdamworld |

amsterdamguide 4The Waag (weigh house) used to be an entrance gate in the 15th C city wall, called St. Anthony’s gate. When the city expanded beyond the wall at the end of the 16th C, the wall was demolished and the gate became the weigh house. The building housed several guilds, such as the painter’s guild, the mason’s guild and the surgeon’s guild in the 17th C. Anatomical lessons took place in the building, like the one depicted by Rembrandt: the Anatomical lesson of Dr. Tulp. For these lessons, that took place during the winter months due to lack of refrigeration, the bodies of convicted criminals were used. At the beginning of the 19th C the building stopped being used as a weigh house. It then had many different purposes and housed for a while the Jewish historical museum. Nowadays there are offices and there is a restaurant.#amsterdamguide #waag #guide_service_amsterdam #walkingtour #guidedtour #amsterdam #history #fremdenfuehrerin_amsterdam #privateguidedtours #guiaenamsterdam #streetsofamsterdam #amsterdamphotography #medieval #holland #guidaamsterdam |
